A word from our director, Sally Mackey

“Having first been exposed to the world of legal costing whilst on work experience during my university years studying law, I decided to make it my vocation. I spent 8 years working under the supervision and guidance of one of the leading authors on costs, Harry Birks. I then decided to set up on my own with a view to building a strong, reliable and varied team of costs draftsmen.

Back in 2009, we provided our first medico-legal report, and due to our growing success in this area we established The Medico-Legal & Neuroscience Partnership, a team of medical and legal experts dedicated to providing first class expert witness services.

We are extremely proud of what we have achieved to date, but like any forward thinking organisation are keen to expand our business further, and continually broaden the services we offer to our clients. In this challenging economic climate we are grateful to those clients who have chosen to work with us, and look forward to meeting with those clients with whom we are yet to build relationships, as well as many more years’ continued success.

Outside of work, I love spending time with my two children and exercising in the great outdoors.”

A word from our Quality Control Manager, Stephen

“Having worked as a Probation Officer and for CAFCASS for 30 years, I have gained significant experience from within both the criminal and civil justice systems. I joined SM Legal Services in 2006 and I am now responsible for managing and developing various office systems and processes and quality control of outgoing bills and reports. I particularly value the culture of both flexibility and teamwork within SM Legal Services, making it a very satisfying company to work for.

Much to the displeasure of my three children, I support Manchester United. I visit the Lake District every year, enjoy reading legal thriller novels, cooking and cycling. I also suffer a weekly beating from my son on the golf course”.

A word from our Office Manager, Sue

“Having secured a Business Administration qualification I went on to work in various secretarial positions within the Legal Services sector, securing over 10 years’ experience. I joined SM Legal Services in 2006. I am now responsible for the administration of the costing and medico-legal services, and manage the team who on a daily basis are liaising with agencies, solicitors and medical experts in order to facilitate a comprehensive and efficient service to our clients who are seeking expert medico-legal reports.. I value the emphasis on personal service, which is a key feature of SM Legal Services.

I have an active social life and enjoy keeping fit”.

A word from our Administrative Manager, Karen

“Having worked at HSBC bank for many years after leaving school, I gained extensive experience in customer service and carried a great deal of responsibility as a key holder. I then took a career change to work for the director of a fabrics company. This involved the day to day running of the business, including overseas transactions, travelling abroad and operating as a buyer and also looking after personnel. I am now at the heart of the operations at SM Legal in the production of high quality medico-legal reports. I like to be kept busy and really enjoy being the central point of contact for clients and our partnership team alike. I am a keen cyclist and a recent convert to a primal real food lifestyle so when I am not at work I can often be found experimenting with real food recipes in the kitchen at home.”

A word from our Operations Manager, Joseph

“I worked in recruitment for 8 years, progressing through to senior consultant before being promoted to manager in 2008. I recruited regularly into the NHS, as well as various firms of solicitors throughout the East and West Midlands, building relationships with fee earners and partners alike. I am the newest member of the team having joined in January 2013, I am responsible for developing relationships with and increasing the number and variety of medical experts within our partnership. In addition to this, I am promoting the services of The Medico-Legal & Neuroscience Partnership to our client base of solicitors within the Midlands and beyond.

I regularly play both football and golf and spend as much time as I can with my two young children. I also like to make a racket on the bass guitar, and have played in a number of bands, gigging throughout the Midlands and in London”.

A word from our Medico-Legal Courier, Andy

“I have been with the business from day one. Previous to joining SM Legal Services, I owned a pine furniture retail business, which involved developing relationships with customers and suppliers, and travelling to all corners of the country to exhibit and sell my stock. I enjoy being on the road and meeting new people, and have developed some very strong, professional and personable relationships during my time as a courier. If you need anything collecting, you can call on me at any time!

I have two young children who always keeps me entertained and on my toes. I am a qualified personal trainer and regularly attend the gym. For my sins, I am a West Bromwich Albion supporter. Boing, Boing”.

A word from our Administrative Support, Jamie

“I joined the company at the start of 2021 as an apprentice after completing a college course in IT. As an apprentice I had been keen to prove myself. I have worked hard to establish myself as a valid member of the team. I am enjoying being part of the process of delivering high quality medico-legal reports and it keeps me very busy.

Outside of work, I enjoy going out with friends and watching the football.”
